The general public are conditioned by prof. as to WHAT they teach... e.g. in the B/room world, even tho the Demos are world class quality, we do not create a demand for instant dance.. in the salsa world, it seems to me ( in the States also ) that we ( teachers that is ) accept that request and fulfill it at the expense of sound teaching principles.
The demand comes from the paying public. They/we are not prepared to spend 6 months doing the basics. We want to be on the dance floor - and we want you, our teachers, to get us there. Reasonably quickly please ;)
Instant dance is a useful marketing tool to get the people in, it's one of the many reasons why Salsa has been so successful. The Ballroom world refuses to compromise on its principles which is admirable but that's also (among other reasons) why their scene is stagnant and deeply uncool.
But, you know, is it really that difficult to organise a class that teaches say 3-4 good, leadable moves and highlights the importance of 1 technical aspect of dance (say, frame or leading) and 1 musical aspect? That's plenty for 1 hour and it covers all the main bases in the kind of ratio that your average Amateur Salsa enthusiast would happily embrace.
