I think that you were right to adjust the routine to fit the audience, that was professional. Not all teachers would do that.
Was it necessary to tell the dancers that, from your perspective, they weren't at the Intermediate level, probably not. Intermediate in one area is Improver at another.
Should the promoter have paid you? Yes.
