Your decisions sound reasonable to me, but you probably should have discussed with the promoter in advance what the people that normally attend that particular class could already do. I think you should have been paid.
Incidentally, how did you know the class were not up to your expectation of 'Intermediate'?
The reason I ask is that I recently attended a class which in theory was actually below my level but the teacher was someone I had never seen before. I struggled with the moves, even though they were not difficult, simply because the teacher ordered the leaders to use a hold which personally I find peculiar and does not work for me. The teacher may well have concluded that my level is lower than what it actually is.
