charge more on the door and give the difference to the venue! we were told just recently that the entrance was going up because no one spent at the bar. the venues have to make money or they wont let the room out. how about giving the dancer a £3 voucher of bottled water when they pay their entrance fee??
The charge on the door has no connection to venue profitability unless there is a hire charge from the venue which is charged whether one person enters or a thousand people enter and which if implemented is often, simply a necessary insurance against low return but not a substitute for any projected profit
The logistics of the above proposal and the fact that it simply isn’t a realistic option have already been explained to death by those who have had much experience in this field! And who have thought out all the pros and cons coming to the conclusion that it just doesn’t add up ... it simply won’t work.
Here is another proposal, one that as far as I'm aware has not yet been aired. So I’ll put it up for discussion on this forum because perhaps it's about time that someone did.
The arguments and - the economics of those arguments - as Paul SS has pointed out have been done to death on this and other Salsa forums.
Those people who have been on the Salsa scene for any length of time know what those arguments are – a good proportion of them agree with the argument - and have come to the conclusion if they didn’t already realise, that they must contribute toward the space in which they dance. They’ll also know that the only feasible way to do that (because it has been explained) is to purchase the beverages that they will doubtless (unless they are an android) need to purchase in order to sustain them during the course of their dancing. They'll probably also be aware that they'll have to spend between £5 and £10 at the bar in order to satisfy the venue owners that they have adequately contributed to the cost of providing the space in which they wish to dance…
People who are new to Salsa will likely hear the arguments from fellow dancers and anyway read the posters and various other messages that most promoters now put up around their venues. No doubt the majority of them will also understand the clear and logical economic argument.
Sadly there are still a significant number of people however, who seem to have a problem with the logic or seem to believe that they are special and should be exempt from making a fair contribution to the cost of the provision of the services they are happy to exploit…
The venue/s by law, have to provide tap water if asked to do so and can be taken to task for not doing so! However, the promoter is not bound by any such law and can refuse entry to anyone for a number of legitimate reasons!
My proposal therefore is … That promoters should BAN the individuals who are seen with a glass of tap water or equally those who bring drinks in to a Salsa Club/Venue because they are people who couldn’t care less about the damage they do to the Salsa industry or how much inconvenience they cause to other dancers who do care about Salsa.
Their actions after all, cause damage, disruption and turmoil for everyone. It would be better for all concerned to rid Salsa once and for all of their presence or force them by the threat to change their selfish ways! If they choose not to and get themselves banned, who cares about them anyway they are selfish selfish selfish.
They have no argument and they have no right either, to sponge off of their fellow dancers; for that is exactly what they do with every pint of tap water they order. They sponge off of their fellow dancers and they damage Salsa. They don’t deserve sympathy or understanding … They’ve had all the fair and reasonable economic arguments patiently put to them.
Most - the vast majority of them, can easily afford to pay for their drinks and simply take advantage of a law that is not relevant to Salsa and was not designed for them to take advantage of, but was designed to protect young venerable ravers who were at risk from dehydration at all night drug induced dance parties where several actually died before the law was introduced hardly your average Salsero!
What they do deserve if they refuse to change their errant ways is an unceremonious BAN … That’s my view! Not that it’ll get much of a response…
