I used a USB 3G modem from Vodafone on my MacBook (running Tiger not Leopard) for ~18 months. Generally I rarely have problems, though sometimes it can take a couple of attempts to initially connect at the start of session.
Don't know about other providers, or if this has changed with the latest products/services, but the one downside is that when serving-up jpeg's Vodafone provides you with a lower-resolution version of the image (to save bandwidth presumably). There was a trick to force it to provide the original high-resolution but that stoped working a few months ago..
