If you want to try before you buy & you have an online DVD thing through amazon or blockbuster - there is a limited selection there for rental that you could peruse. A word of warning in that most of the ones through this route are old ones or fall into the salsa-cise type horror content
There are a reasonable number of DVD's in the market place that aim to cater for beginners or for technique in a number of areas
Various teacher that I know of that do beginner type dvds are Edie the salsa freak, susana montero, marchant birch, troy & jorjet and various others
Again a lot of dvds will cover specific areas even for beginners with some focusing on particular style, partnerwork, shines, body movement , spinning or rhythm/timing depending on the title
I would agree somewhat with tt - that classes are much better at teaching the nuances and at getting actual feedback, however if your work schedule doesnt let you and your partner attend any of the bristol salsa nights (of which there is a multitude of choice judging from the regular events section here) - then I am sure a DVD will be a reasonable alternative to get some form of technique
I would say however in response to tt - there are quite a lot of dance dvds i have seen over the years that do have very good content in them (better than some teachers i have seen try to teach the same) - and with anything the degree to which a dvd (and a real life teacher) is useful in teaching technique depends on how good & clear the content is and how well you learn from it & practice and apply it
Again if you go out and attend a salsa night sure you will bump into other dancers who may be able to even advise as to what dvds they may have used to learn from and also let you borrow them to get an idea of what they deliver before you shell out pounds and shillings on a dvd you find you dont like
The main site i know that sells dvds in the UK is www.salsafever who could probably advise you as well
