Surely the energy levels required depends on the routine? If you put three lifts in a salsa routine, multiple spins and perform it to a fast track it's going to take as much effort and energy as V. waltz or quickstep?

I accept that jive and the various swing dances are in another league with their Energizer Bunny bounce. But contemporary, ballet, slow waltz, foxtrot, tango, rumba etc aren't so high energy (although all obviously need high fitness levels and strength). Whichever style they perform all the contestants are breathing heavily at the end regardless of their dance background.

As for who can win I think these competitions have a built in advantage for contemporary dancers because of their versatility and hip-hop dancers because of what they can show in their solos.
