BBC 4 Fridays. Describes the evolution of Latin music through the merging of different cultures in the USA. So far focussed on New York but next week going over to the West Coast and bringing in the influence of Mexican music and Santana. Half way through the series now, but anyone can catch up on Iplayer.
During the Seventies I missed all this great Fania music, all I knew about was the Eagles and Pink Floyd and Disco, what a shame. The only Latin song I ever recognised as Latin was La Bamba which incidentally the Beatles virtually copied and called it Twist and Shout. It was a wonder they weren't sued for plagiarism as George Harrison was later to be over My Sweet Lord sounding like She's So Fine by The Chiffons.
Salsa was danced back in the Seventies but the clips didn't show much. I wonder how different it looked back then than today, if any different at all.
